Account book, 1878-1880, Clifton Plantation, Georgetown County, S.C., listing contracts with workers and notes on rice, cotton, and agricultural crops; including contract, 1878, with David Phinny, hired as foreman; labor agreement with "the contract hands," recording that full hands would receive 2 acres to cultivate for themselves in exchange for 3 days labor and agreement to work for rations at all other times, and other agreements, including payment in rations for additional labor when required by foreman. Account, 1878, listing expenses paid during each month; monthly crop results, 1878; list, 1878, of plantation tickets issued; list, 1879-1880, identifying workers hired by name and labor performed; list, 1879 and 1880, crop results; also including undated inventory, documenting furnishings and items at Clifton Plantation.

Samuel Wylie Crawford was a native of Franklin County, Pa.; Crawford studied medicine, and in 1851 became an assistant surgeon in the U. S. army. He served in various forts in the southwest, principally in Texas, until 1860 when he was stationed in Charleston, S.C., at Fort Moultrie and later at Fort Sumter; Crawford commanded a battery during the bombardment. of Fort Sumter, 12 Apr. 1861.
